Weighted quoted APY is the deposit-weighted mean of the initial APYs, not an annualized return for the whole ladder. Cash flows occur on different dates. Quotes are conditional on membership, location, relationship and new-money rules; confirm eligibility and deposit insurance across all rungs at each institution.
How the ladder works
Allocate the deposit equally, with any rounding remainder in the last rung. Each first maturity returns deposit × (1 + APY / 100)months / 12. Interest stays deposited. Shorter rungs can provide liquidity while longer rungs lock their starting rate.
Reinvesting a maturing rung is a separate decision at an unknown future rate. This calculator does not assume you can renew at today's APY. It never substitutes a nearby term for a missing exact maturity.
Questions
What is a CD ladder?
A CD ladder divides a deposit among CDs with different maturities so some funds become available sooner while other funds remain in longer terms.
Where do the default rates come from?
Published institution quotes verified within the last seven days, matched to the exact term and known balance tier for each rung. Nationwide mode excludes ZIP-specific and local-only offers.
Is the weighted APY my realized ladder return?
No. It summarizes starting APYs. Different maturity dates and future reinvestment rates determine realized returns.
Why is a rung missing?
There may be no fresh exact-term quote, a known minimum may exceed the allocation, or balance tiers may be ambiguous. Change the amount or location; no rate is invented.
Can several rungs use the same institution?
Yes. Review the combined deposits and interest at that institution and confirm applicable insurance coverage. Product conditions must be checked before opening.
