How CD interest is calculated

Maturity value = deposit × (1 + APY)months / 12. APY already includes compounding, so no compounding setting is needed.

Example: $10,000 at 4.30% APY for 11 months grows to 10,000 × 1.04311/12 = $10,393.47, or $393.47 of interest.

CD interest reference table using verified rates

This CD interest calculator estimates earnings using the highest exact-term rate in our tracked results, not an assumed nationwide offer. A dash means an exact-term quote is unavailable or the deposit is below the stated minimum. Interest remains in the CD; taxes and fees are excluded.

Questions

How much does a $10,000 CD earn?

At 4.00% APY, $10,000 earns about $400 in 12 months, $198 in 6 months and $816 over 2 years, before tax. Enter your APY and term above for an exact figure.

Is CD interest taxable?

Yes. CD interest is taxed as ordinary income at the federal and state level, in the year it is credited, even if you leave it in the CD.

What happens when a CD matures?

Most CDs renew automatically for the same term at the rate in effect at renewal, which can be much lower than a promotional rate. Check the account disclosure for the grace period and renewal terms.

How do I calculate CD interest manually?

Convert APY to a decimal, add 1, raise that to months divided by 12, multiply by the deposit, then subtract the deposit. This assumes interest stays in the CD and there are no withdrawals.

Does this CD rate calculator use APR or APY?

Use the advertised APY. Entering a nominal interest rate instead can understate compounding; convert it with the APY calculator first.

Does the estimate include early withdrawal penalties?

No. The maturity estimate assumes you keep the CD for the full term. Use the early withdrawal calculator and your account disclosure to estimate the cost of closing it sooner.

Sources and assumptions
