Do jumbo CDs really pay more?

By · Editorial policy

Compare matched $10,000 and $100,000 CD tiers using verified product quotes and independent institution counts.

Published · Facts changed . Quotes verified within the preceding seven days; individual source dates are shown below. Methodology

Does depositing $100,000 earn a higher APY?

Among 58 independent institutions with a matched $100,000 tier, 38 paid more than the same product's $10,000 tier, 20 paid the same and 0 paid less. The median jumbo-minus-lower-tier difference was 10 bp.

A jumbo label does not establish a rate premium. This comparison uses the applicable balance tiers of the same product, kind, exact term, institution and ZIP, verified on the same UTC day. A $100,000 quote without a separately stated $100,000 minimum tier is not counted as a jumbo pair.

How pairs are selected

Each regulator contributes one pair. We prefer the exact one-year term; otherwise we choose the term closest to one year, with ties going to the shorter term and then product, ZIP and institution slug in alphabetical order. Selection does not favor a larger premium. Products with unknown or conflicting applicable tiers are excluded. Products with different names are not assumed equivalent.

The reported premium describes selected pairs, rather than every product or a guaranteed benefit of increasing your deposit. Taxes, account conditions and insurance limits require separate consideration.

Sources, scope and methodology

All findings are generated from verified D1 records using fixed calculations and templates. No language model writes these findings. Stale and future-dated quotes are excluded, as are relationship-only quotes. A regulator ID counts once in each institution-level comparison. This tracked sample is not a deposit-weighted national average.

Index comparisons use the highest applicable $10,000 quote at each exact term per regulator. A median or P90 requires at least 30 independent institutions in its group. Fresh regional and promotional offers can be included; availability and membership conditions still apply. ZIP comparisons instead match a stated product, term and tier.

Routine re-verification does not change the financial-content modification date. Tables can change as rates, coverage or freshness change. Download index data and source snapshots · Download current rate quotes · Full methodology · Corrections
