Do non-benchmark terms pay more than nearby common terms?

Among 309 independent institutions with matched quotes, the selected non-benchmark term paid more at 206, the same at 45 and less at 58. Its median APY difference versus the nearest common term was 30 bp.

Offers at terms such as 7, 11 and 13 months can sit between common maturities. We measure their observed APYs, without inferring why an institution set an offer or predicting renewal rates. A non-benchmark term is not necessarily promotional.

Definition and selection

Our common-term benchmark set is 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, 24, 36, 48 and 60 months. For this classification, a term qualifies when it is within three days of months × 365 / 12 (rounded), or equals months × 30. This includes common day-count variants such as 90-day and 180-day CDs. Other observed maturities are classified as non-benchmark terms; actual quoted terms remain in the table.

For each non-benchmark quote we choose the nearest common maturity at the same institution, ZIP and UTC verification day. Equidistant maturities use the shorter term, then the higher applicable APY. Each regulator contributes its highest eligible non-benchmark quote with a matched comparison; APY ties use the shorter term, then product, ZIP and institution slug alphabetically. This selection favors the best observed non-benchmark offer, not a typical product.

The two terms and products may differ. An APY gap is not an equal-duration dollar profit, and neither rate establishes what a future reinvestment will earn. The table reports quoted annualized yields before tax and penalties.

Sources, scope and methodology

All findings are generated from verified D1 records using fixed calculations and templates. No language model writes these findings. Stale and future-dated quotes are excluded, as are relationship-only quotes. A regulator ID counts once in each institution-level comparison. This tracked sample is not a deposit-weighted national average.

Index comparisons use the highest applicable $10,000 quote at each exact term per regulator. A median or P90 requires at least 30 independent institutions in its group. Fresh regional and promotional offers can be included; availability and membership conditions still apply. ZIP comparisons instead match a stated product, term and tier.

Routine re-verification does not change the financial-content modification date. Tables can change as rates, coverage or freshness change. Download index data and source snapshots · Download current rate quotes · Full methodology · Corrections
